January 2022 Take Small Steps To Achieve Big Goals
Happy New Year, Student Chapter Advisors and Chapter Leaders!
I want to give a big shout out to all of our Chapter leaders for staying engaged and continuing to lower the shoulder and come up with new and innovative ways to make your Chapter stronger and engaged.
As we start the beginning of a new year, Chapter's often start looking into their set goals and may realize that due to the setback caused by the pandemic those goals might not be achievable. We’ve often heard that the road to success starts with setting your goal, breaking it down into small steps and celebrating achievements along the way. This happens to be a great approach as Chapters are conducting their first meeting of the year and begin laying out planned events for 2022. Please continue to read below on How to Break Your Goals Down Into Small Actionable Steps and Take Action!
We look forward to working with your Chapter and providing the support needed to continue striving and building long-lasting connections. In 2022 our goal will be to open the line of communication between AWS HQ and all Chapter leaders and provide one on one support where needed. If your Chapter is having difficulties conducting meetings, events, or retaining student engagement, please reach out to me. We will be happy to bounce ideas and provide the necessary support to get your Chapter back on track!
In an effort to streamline our communication with each Student Chapter and to cover items that are important, we highly recommend taking your time and read this month’s AWS Student Chapter Newsletter thoroughly.

We encourage AWS Student Chapter leaders to inform Chapter Members and student peers of all AWS Foundation Scholarship updates. This year alone the AWS Foundation is expecting to award more than $2 million in scholarships. Participating in this webinar will allow students to get familiar with the application process and much more.
Please contact Evelyn Andino (eandino@aws.org) with any questions.
AWS Student Chapter Officers and Advisors are encouraged to participate in our monthly Student Chapter Solutions Conversations.
2. How To Break Your Goals Down Into Small Actionable Steps
The first and most important step is beginning to think about what the goal is and what it would look like completed.
Gain clarity on the goals outlined by the Chapter
Identify the top two achievable goals
Create specific milestones/timelines
Set a good time frame
Work consistently as a TEAM!
Take Action!
Recognition is more meaningful when it is tied to a specific accomplishment or Student Chapter objective. If you have a student member or leader whose activities have produced outstanding school, community, and/or industry achievements. Give them the recognition they deserve by presenting them with a Student Chapter Member Award. Nomination forms may be submitted to AWS any time during the year. A special certificate will then be sent directly to the requestor for presentation to the recipient. Recipients of the award will be recognized in the Welding Journal.
3. 2022 Membership Town Halls w/ AWS Executive Director & CEO, Gary Konarska
From Gary: One of my new goals for 2022 is to keep you all updated on what's happening "behind the scenes" at AWS Headquarters. As a result, I'll be starting live, streaming quarterly member webinars highlighting important company milestones and updates that I present during quarterly AWS Staff Town Hall meetings. All sessions will be recorded and uploaded to the Member Network the following day, so if you can't join me, you'll still be able to learn what's going on here at AWS HQ.

4. 2022 AWS Leadership Symposium Student Application + New Member Webinar
In 2022 two events will be held, the first July 24-27, and the second August 7-10. Up to five students will be selected to attend each event. AWS is seeking applications from students who wish to attend the Leadership Symposium in 2022 at AWS Headquarters, in Miami, FL.
If you know of a student whose activities have produced outstanding school and community achievements and who exhibits exceptional leadership skills, the AWS Leadership Symposium will provide an excellent opportunity for him or her to grow these qualities and become a future AWS Section leader.
To help our newest members learn more about their AWS member benefits we have launched a quarterly webinar series to provide an overview of what AWS members receive. While new members are the target audience, long-time members are welcome to attend. This online event hosted by AWS staff will provide an overview of AWS Individual Membership benefits, how to navigate the AWS Member Portal, and how to access several features. These online events are free, but registration is required.
Applications for National, District, and Section Scholarships are now open with a deadline of March 1st. More than $2 million in scholarships will be awarded in 2022. Students attending technical schools, two-year college, and four-year universities are eligible to apply. Visit www.aws.org/scholarships to learn more.

About this email:
Each month, I will distribute an electronic newsletter to all Student Chapter Advisors and active Student Chapter Officers (who have a valid email address in our database).
The goal of distributing these newsletters is to effectively communicate important details we want you to be aware of.
I encourage you to discuss these details with your Student Chapter leadership team to ensure everyone is up-to-speed on all relevant news coming from AWS Headquarters as well as a feature on recent successes from some of your colleagues in the field. Reviewing these details as a team is a great way to promote and foster a strong line of communication among Student Chapter leadership as well as within your local Section.
